The Leading Release of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Secures the Premier Place.

At first glance, this work may look more like a challenging academic examination than the latest popular music record from a musician whose previous hit was a collaboration with an international pop icon. Split across 4 separate sections and performed in thirteen tongues, we have a head-spinning symphonic opus that delves into feminine mystery, religious ascent, and physical change, frequently through the prism of different women saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a topic handled with grounded openness elsewhere—is launched heavenward here, buoyed by the constant sound of a major orchestra and input from an award-winning composer among an extensive roll call of collaborators. Its sheer audacity by itself makes the efforts of contemporary pop stars look rather modest.

Transcending Scholarly Exercise

The fact that this album manages to escape overly intellectual posturing feels nearly miraculous, and full credit going to the artist. While this is not the first time album to alchemize historical sounds with modern styles, the stakes are far higher here, and the tightrope walk far more dramatic. The element that really elevates her fourth release, beyond its complex tunes, rich arrangements, and inherent theatricality, is a core spirit of fun. Similar to the legendary Björk at her peak, there is a captivating sense to Rosalía's voice which sweeps you into its tornado. When she's breaking your heart in two, the listener still desire to be alongside her through the journey.

A Signature Example of Exuberance

That playful energy shines brightly during the stunning Italian song about Saint Clare. It bathes in a sorrowful melancholy for several moments. Suddenly, all the music drops away, and there's a gleeful giggle followed by a comment before a comically over-the-top string crescendo crashes in like cartoonish impact. The song then shifts to the frenetic single featuring racing orchestration, an imposing choir, and a cameo appearance from the artist Björk.

"The charm of this album lies in you rarely quite know—nor wish to know—what you will go next."

Almost every track ends at a totally different place than where it began. One moment explores the transient trappings of celebrity over a featherlight symphony before disintegrating into digital cacophony. Elsewhere, a song that recalls her previous trap-infused work begins off moody and sinister, featuring menacing vocals, before sudden flamenco handclaps and a heavenly chorus enter to smooth its rough corners.

The Bridge Between Experiment & Pop

A key achievement on the album is straddling the line between bold innovation and mainstream accessibility. It is no coincidence that it has become her first work to crack the upper reaches of major markets: its heart contains a suite of truly catchy pop songs. A song sung entirely in the English language builds around a refrain that feels to gather more and more infectious melodies while it spins upward. This trick gets echoed by a different expansive ballad that expands and constricts, intertwining layered tunes like an intricate weave.

  • A waltz-like song charms via its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • In its words, it shares with cultural impact of other heartbreak anthems, lambasting a former lover labeled an "psychological bully".
  • Across these tracks, the vocals carry a sharp smile, like a storybook figure concealing a knife: "Gold medal in being a scoundrel / You have the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

Lux represents pop on a grand scale, a hungry grasp for high Art in an era of looming artificial sameness. It eschews solipsism in favor of glorious elevation, creating a dramatic spectacle that masterfully manages its own inherent excess. It is an abundant well of hidden gems that requires patience to completely explore but never seem like a chore. While other major releases of 2025 seemed like a meager scraps, Lux offers a sumptuous feast where the characters around it, perhaps intoxicated on sacred wine, flutter from discussions about historical saints, the galvanizing feeling of heartbreaking grief, and common stories about hopeless men. It is a contemporary theatrical production from pop's truly endlessly creative visionary.
