Approximately 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postal boxes were defaced, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a statement.
Police say they were notified late on Wednesday, when a individual observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored fluid.
The substance had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then found many other vandalized vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement state early analysis show the substance was most likely human blood.
"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; authorities are presently not aware of any injuries in relation with the incident," they commented.
Local authorities stated they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the public for details.
A senior representative stated the vandalism made him without words and had to be addressed promptly.
"This event strikes at the center of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the far-right terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on a platform, mentioning the death of nine individuals by a gunman focusing on individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
